I don't think I can remember a time when, if there was a piece of paper and a pencil handy, I wasn't doodling or scribbling. Nor can I begin to count the number of margins in school books and report covers that fell victim to my pencil scratches.
Today, I'm even worse. Rather than wait to come across pencil and paper, I carry them with me. I've been known to carry a paper and pencil caddy as I've visited with relatives, taken college exams, and gone to church socials. I admit it, I'm a compulsive scribbler.
Cartooning is my hobby. It's a wonderful way to "while away the time" and has always been a source of pleasure.
It's my way of taking a look at the world at different angles. It makes me to think and keep an open mind. I am forced to think in the abstract at one moment and within certain boundaries the next; it keeps me flexible. Since I am my own worst art critic, I am always working to improve my drawing, always practicing. Cartooning has shown me the importance of a sense of humor, as well as a command of language, and I am working to further develop in these areas as well.
I've been told by some that cartooning is a complete waste of time. If it is, I'm too busy, and having way too much fun, to care.
